Frequently asked questions
What Matcha Map is, how it differs from Google Maps, how Matcha Pick and ceremonial-grade reports work, and how to add LA cafes.
- What is Matcha Map?
- Matcha Map is a single-axis curated map for Los Angeles: one question per cafe — does this place serve real matcha? We collect matcha lattes, ceremonial drinks, soft serve, and bakery items, then rank spots with community reports, ratings, and reviews.
- How is Matcha Map different from Google Maps or Yelp?
- General apps list every cafe. Matcha Map filters for matcha-specific signals: menu items, ceremonial-grade reports, recent reviews, and badges like Matcha Pick. You spend less time opening menus that only sell ‘green tea latte’ powder drinks.
- How are spots selected and verified?
- We seed from Google Places with quality filters, then refine with user submissions (‘Has matcha’, ‘Ceremonial grade’, ‘No matcha’). Confidence scores and Matcha Pick / Crowd Choice badges highlight places the community trusts.
- What does Matcha Pick mean?
- Matcha Pick is our top badge for standout matcha — strong drinks, consistent quality, or exceptional menu depth. Use the Matcha Pick filter on the map to shortlist LA favorites quickly.
- What counts as ceremonial grade matcha?
- Users tag ceremonial grade when a cafe uses higher-quality powder for drinks (not just culinary/blended culinary grade). Menus change — check the latest reviews and reports on each spot page.
- Does Matcha Map cover all of Los Angeles?
- Yes — the map is LA-wide (Westside, Downtown, Valley, South Bay, etc.). Pan and search near you, or browse by category: cafe, dessert, bakery, ice cream, and other matcha-friendly spots.
- Can I add a cafe that is missing?
- Yes. Sign in, tap Add a spot, and submit the name and pin. Add a short note about the signature matcha drink. Other matcha lovers can verify with reports and reviews over time.
- Is Matcha Map free?
- Yes. Browse the map, read spot pages with community reviews, save lists, share links, and leave reviews for free at matchamap.net.
